New Delhi: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high-severity alert for Chrome users on desktop devices. They strongly urge everyone to update their browsers immediately. The warning, detailed in the latest CERT-In Vulnerability Note CIVN-2024-0274, highlights serious vulnerabilities in Google Chrome that, if exploited, could put your computer at significant risk.

What’s the Risk?

CERT-In’s advisory focuses on vulnerabilities in versions before 128.0.6613.113/.114 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. These flaws are considered high severity, meaning they pose a significant risk of exploitation. The vulnerabilities stem from two main issues:

  • Type Confusion in V8: This flaw in Chrome’s JavaScript engine can lead to arbitrary code execution, a dangerous form of cyberattack.
  • Heap Buffer Overflow: This occurs when more data is written or read than a buffer can hold, which could corrupt data, crash programs, or run malicious code.

Attackers could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending a specially crafted request to your system. If successful, they could take control of your device, install malware, access sensitive data, or cause a denial-of-service (DoS) condition, rendering your system unresponsive.

What Should You Do?

To protect yourself, CERT-In recommends that all users update their browsers to the latest version immediately. Google has released patches for these vulnerabilities:

  • Updated Versions: 128.0.6613.113/.114 for Windows and Mac, 128.0.6613.113 for Linux.

Updating your browser not only addresses these specific vulnerabilities but also ensures you’re protected against other potential security threats.
