The Explosion and Its Aftermath
The blast struck two blocks of the mine, Blocks B and C, around 9:00 PM local time. At the time of the explosion, 69 miners were working in the area. Rescue operations have been launched in Block C, but the high levels of methane gas pose significant challenges.
Ali Akbar Rahimi, the governor of South Khorasan Province, has stated that the rescue operation is expected to last several hours. The incident took place 540 kilometers southeast of Tehran, and there are concerns that more miners may be trapped beneath the debris.
Government Response and Condolences
In response to the disaster, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed his deep sorrow and offered condolences to the families of the victims. He has also announced that ministers from the Labor and Security departments have been dispatched to investigate the cause of the explosion.
Pezeshkian’s post on X (formerly Twitter) conveyed his grief and solidarity with those affected by the tragedy. The explosion has highlighted the dangers faced by miners and the importance of ensuring safety measures in such hazardous environments.
