Apple enters the AI competition by introducing ‘Apple GPT,’ a chatbot inspired by ChatGPT, with testing currently in progress.
Delhi: Apple has entered the competitive field of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by crafting its language model called “Apple GPT.” This strategic development is perceived as a direct challenge to major industry players such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Meta. As reported by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple has established its AI infrastructure, codenamed “Ajax,” to construct extensive language models. Ajax is reported to operate on the Google Cloud platform and was constructed utilizing Google’s JAX machine learning framework.
Apple is known for offering technologies and features that other companies already provide, but with an innovative touch that makes them unique. And artificial intelligence (AI) is certainly one of those technologies. Nearly a year after other major players launched their AI tools, Apple is reportedly spending millions of dollars a day on developing its own AI.
Developing large-scale language models (LLMs) involves substantial expenses, encompassing costly hardware, data processing using GPUs and TPUs, and extensive storage for datasets. Additionally, it results in substantial energy consumption, contributing to elevated power bills, given the significant power requirements of these systems. Considering all these elements, along with the time and specialized knowledge needed to refine these machine learning models, it becomes a financially demanding undertaking, and Apple is bearing the direct financial consequences.
