Mild Quake in India’s Himachal Pradesh

The first tremor was recorded at 9:18 AM IST in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, India. The 3.4 magnitude quake struck at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers, with its epicenter at 31.49°N, 76.94°E, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). Local authorities confirmed that no injuries or damage were reported, though the tremor briefly caused panic among residents.

Aftershock Shakes Central Myanmar

Around the same time, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit central Myanmar, near the town of Meiktila, situated between Mandalay and Naypyidaw. This tremor is being classified as a significant aftershock of the catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, killing over 3,600 people and displacing thousands. Sunday’s quake did not result in new casualties or structural damage, but residents remain on edge amid ongoing seismic activity.

Quakes Extend to Central Asia

Shortly after the tremors in India and Myanmar, seismic activity was recorded in Tajikistan, although details regarding magnitude and epicenter are still emerging. Reports suggest the quake was felt in several parts of Dushanbe and surrounding areas, prompting people to evacuate buildings as a precaution.

A Stark Reminder of Regional Risk

Experts note that this string of earthquakes, while varying in intensity, highlights the tectonic instability of the region. Much of South and Central Asia lies along major fault lines, including the Himalayan Frontal Thrust and other fault systems linked to the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.
