Android 16 includes Material 3 Expressive Design, LE Audio, and new security features

Google I/O 2025: A New Era in AI, Android 16, and XR
Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O 2025, is set to commence today, May 20, at 10:30 PM IST. This year’s event promises significant announcements, particularly in the realms of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Android 16, and Extended Reality (XR).
1. Gemini AI: The New Face of AI
Google has introduced the latest version of its Gemini AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro (I/O Edition), tailored specifically for coding and software development. This model enhances code transformation, editing, and handling complex agent workflows. Notably, Gemini 2.5 Pro ranks first on the LMArena leaderboard and achieves a 63.8% score on SWE-Bench, showcasing its excellence in real-world coding challenges.
Additionally, Google has unveiled Gemini Nano, a lightweight generative AI API designed for on-device execution. Gemini Nano allows for local processing of sensitive data, offline access, and cost savings by reducing inference costs. It supports text-to-text modalities, with plans for more modalities in the future. Developers can leverage the Google AI Edge SDK for Android to integrate Gemini Nano into their applications.
2. Android 16: A New Design and Enhanced Features
Android 16 introduces the “Material 3 Expressive” design language, offering a more colorful and animated interface. Key features include real-time updates on the lock screen, improved notification management, and seamless integration across smartphones, smartwatches, and Android Auto. The update also brings Bluetooth LE Audio support, enabling simultaneous audio streaming to multiple devices.
Design and User Interface
Android 16’s “Material 3 Expressive” design language emphasizes personalization with enhanced animations, typography, and dynamic color themes. The lock screen now supports real-time updates, allowing users to track deliveries, navigation, or workouts without unlocking their devices. Additionally, the update introduces a redesigned UI with forced dark mode across apps, improved battery health menus, and Live Updates resembling Apple’s Dynamic Island.
Connectivity and Audio Sharing
Android 16 enhances Bluetooth capabilities by introducing Bluetooth LE Audio support. This allows users to stream audio to multiple Bluetooth devices simultaneously, such as headphones or speakers, without complex pairing processes. To use this feature, both the source device and receiving devices must support Bluetooth LE Audio.
Security Enhancements
Android 16 introduces several security enhancements to protect users from potential threats. The Advanced Protection Program, previously available only to high-risk users, is now accessible to all Android 16 users. This program includes features like USB Protection to block physical attacks via charging ports, AI-driven scam detection in calls and texts, theft detection locking, and blocking connections to insecure networks or outdated 2G networks.
3. Android XR: Advancements in Mixed Reality
Google is advancing its mixed reality platform, Android XR, which is designed for headsets and smart glasses. The platform includes tools like Jetpack Compose for XR and ARCore, enabling developers to create 3D content, hand-tracking, and stereo video experiences. Android XR aims to compete with other mixed reality platforms and is expected to play a significant role in the future of augmented and virtual reality applications.
4. Project Astra: AI-Powered Smart Glasses
As part of its XR initiatives, Google has introduced Project Astra, AI-powered smart glasses that offer voice interaction and computer vision capabilities. These glasses are designed to provide users with an immersive experience, integrating seamlessly with other Google services and devices.
5. Integration of Gemini AI in Android and Automotive Systems
Google has integrated Gemini AI into Android Auto and Automotive OS, enhancing in-car experiences with smart navigation, entertainment, and voice control features. This integration aims to provide users with a more connected and intelligent driving experience.
6. Live Streaming and Developer Sessions
The Google I/O 2025 keynote will be streamed live on Google’s I/O website and YouTube channel, starting at 10:30 PM IST. Following the keynote, developer-focused sessions will delve deeper into topics such as Gemini AI, Android 16, and Android XR, providing insights and technical details for developers.
