Iowa School Mourns Heroic Principal: Dan Marburger Sacrifices Life Shielding Students During Shooting
New Delhi: In a serious turn of events, the Perry High School community is mourning the passing of Principal Dan Marburger, a courageous man who sacrificed his life to protect students during the deadly shooting at the school on January 4 . Caldwell Parish Funeral Home & Crematory confirmed Marburger’s passing, a day after his family shared the heartbreaking news on a GoFundMe page.
Marburger, who was seriously injured during the shooting, displayed remarkable bravery and selflessness when he saved the students from the attacker’s bullets. An 11-year-old middle school student was tragically killed and six others were injured in the attack, which began in the school cafeteria. The 17-year-old attacker later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The state Department of Public Safety recognized Marburger’s heroism, saying he “acted selflessly and put himself in harm’s way in an apparent effort to protect his students.” News of his passing sparked an outpouring of grief and support across social media platforms, with the Perry community expressing condolences and gratitude for his sacrifice.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds expressed her sympathy, acknowledging Marburger’s ultimate sacrifice in protecting students. In honor of his heroic actions, flags across the state will fly at half-staff until the day of Marburger’s funeral.
Marburger’s daughter, Claire, remembered her father as a “gentle giant” and said that his tendency to protect students was not surprising, adding, “It’s just Dad.” Serving as principal of Perry High School since 1995, Marburger leaves behind a legacy of courage and compassion.
The tragic incident came to light just before classes resumed after the winter break, with officials revealing that the shooter, armed with firearms, also had an improvised explosive device, which experts successfully defused. The GoFundMe page for Marburger’s family continues to receive contributions, ensuring that his legacy and the impact of his selflessness lives on within the united Perry community.
