Design

Differentiating between the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R by appearance alone is challenging since they share a similar design language. Both feature an aluminum frame with glass panels on the front and back, slim bezels, and a circular island housing three cameras and an LED flash. The OnePlus 12 is slightly larger in size compared to the 12R but only by a small margin. The color options serve as the main visual distinction, with the OnePlus 12 offering Ever Green, Rock Black, and White, while the OnePlus 12R comes in Black, Blue, Gold, and Gray (with additional options potentially available for the Indian variant).

Display

In terms of display technology, the OnePlus 12 features a 6.82″ BOE X1 OLED panel with a resolution of 1440×3168 pixels. It boasts a variable 120Hz refresh rate, along with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support. The display reaches an impressive peak brightness of 4,500 units, offering vibrant visuals. On the other hand, the OnePlus 12R comes with a slightly smaller 6.74″ BOE X1 OLED HDR10+ display. It also offers a variable 120Hz refresh rate and is capped at a resolution of 1.5K. This gives it a flagship-like quality without overshadowing the OnePlus 12. The brightness levels on the OnePlus 12R are similar to the OnePlus 12, ensuring good visibility in various lighting conditions. Both devices are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, providing durability against scratches and accidental falls.

Performance

In terms of specifications, both the OnePlus 12 and 12R are top-tier devices, although the OnePlus 12 holds the advantage in this head-to-head comparison. The OnePlus 12 features the advanced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, offering up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. On the other hand, the OnePlus 12R (also known as the OnePlus Ace 3 in China) utilizes the previous year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. The flagship chipset and larger RAM capacity of the OnePlus 12 provide a significant performance advantage. Benchmark scores, such as AnTuTu v10 and GeekBench v6, showcase the superiority of the OnePlus 12. Additionally, both devices excel in thermal management, thanks to the cutting-edge 9140mm2 technology, resulting in exceptional performance within their respective segments.

Software

Turns out there’s not much difference when the software is concerned. OnePlus 12 arrives with Android 14-powered OxygenOS 14 for the international markets. It uses ColorOS 14 for China. On the other hand, the OnePlus 12R uses the same setup for software. The exception will be the number of Android upgrades both the phones will get over their lifetimes. The OnePlus 12 is the clear winner here taking the ‘flagship’ title.

Camera

While both phones appear to feature a triple camera setup, the camera configurations of the OnePlus 12R and OnePlus 12 are actually quite distinct. The OnePlus 12R takes after the OnePlus 11R, employing a 50MP Sony IMX890 primary camera with OIS, accompanied by an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro camera. For selfies, there’s a 16MP front-facing camera. The 12R supports recording up to 4K resolution at 60fps.In contrast, the OnePlus 12 utilizes a Sony LYT-808 dual-stacked 1/1.43″ sensor with OIS and a wide f/1.6 aperture. It is complemented by a 48MP ultrawide lens and a 64MP OV64B periscope telephoto camera with OIS and 3x optical zoom capabilities. The OnePlus 12 also benefits from Hasselblad (5th-gen) color calibration, enhancing its photographic capabilities.

Battery

The thing is, the OnePlus 12R uses a 5,400mAh battery paired alongside a 100W SuperVOOC charger. According to OnePlus, this should charge the battery from zero to hero in 27 minutes. It is also equipped with a SuperVOOC S power management chip with a 99.5% discharge efficiency (the highest). The OnePlus 12, on the other hand, uses a 5,400mAh battery paired with a 100W SuperVOOC charger. I won’t say there are many changes between the two up till this point. The OnePlus 12 also counts 50W wireless and 10W reverse wireless charging which you won’t find on the 12R. Again, this is fair given the price tag both the devices are targeting.

Ultimately, the decision boils down to personal preferences and budget, allowing users to select the device that best suits their needs.
