New Delhi: Apple’s iPhone lineup always generates excitement among tech enthusiasts, and even with the recent launch of the iPhone 15 series, fans are already eagerly looking ahead to what’s next. While we anticipate the release of the iPhone 16 series, set to debut in the coming months, early information about the possible 2025 iteration, likely named the iPhone 17, has started surfacing online.

Leaked renders suggest that the iPhone 17 series will bring a significant upgrade, incorporating many features from Apple’s flagship Pro lineup. One notable enhancement includes high refresh-rate displays and the highly coveted Always-On feature. A report from South Korean publication The Elec, discovered by MacRumors, indicates Apple’s intention to equip the non-Pro iPhone models with these coveted features starting in 2025. If these rumors hold true, this alteration will signify a significant departure for Apple, as it has traditionally reserved such functionalities exclusively for its Pro iPhone models.

Presently, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature a 60Hz refresh rate, while the Pro models boast a smoother 120Hz ProMotion display. Some users have expressed disappointment, arguing that Apple’s standard iPhones fall behind competitors by not offering higher refresh rates, even at lower price points.

To address this concern, Apple purportedly plans to transition entirely from Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon (LTPS) displays to Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) displays for the iPhone 17 series. This switch is crucial because LTPO displays enable the ProMotion feature in Pro models, allowing the refresh rate to dynamically adjust between 1Hz and 120Hz based on the on-screen content. Consequently, users can enjoy smoother scrolling, animations, and improved battery life as the refresh rate lowers for static content.

In addition to the anticipated higher refresh rate, the Always-On display feature is expected to reach standard iPhone models in 2025. Currently exclusive to models like the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Always-On Display (AOD) allows users to conveniently view essential information such as the time, date, widgets, and a dimmed version of their wallpaper, even when the phone is locked. By leveraging the LTPO displays’ low refresh rate capabilities, Apple intends to make AOD a prominent feature across its entire 2025 lineup.

It’s important to note that these exciting changes will debut with the iPhone 17, distinguishing it from the upcoming iPhone 16 series, which is expected to maintain the distinction between standard and Pro models, without ProMotion or Always-On display functionality, during its 2024 release.

Furthermore, display analyst Ross Young suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro models will adopt a taller 19.6:9 aspect ratio, which will then be inherited by the standard iPhone 17 models next year. The display sizes are expected to increase from 6.12- and 6.69-inches to 6.27- and 6.86-inches, respectively, representing a 2.5 per cent size boost for both devices.

Overall, the reports indicate that compared to its predecessors, the iPhone 17 models will receive substantial enhancements, including larger screens and LTPO technology for ProMotion and always-on displays.
