Non-Maruti best-seller: Not Nexon, Creta, Seltos, or Scorpio !
New Delhi: In a rare occurrence, a non-Maruti Suzuki vehicle has clinched the title of bestseller for two consecutive months, defying the dominance of Maruti Suzuki in the Indian car market. Surprisingly, it’s not the Tata Nexon or Hyundai Creta but the Tata Punch, a micro-SUV from the homegrown automaker. In March 2024, the Tata Punch topped the charts with sales of 17,547 units, and it continued its winning streak in April 2024, registering volumes of 19,158 units.
Available in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) variants, the Tata Punch offers versatility to customers. The ICE version, priced between Rs 6.13 lakh and Rs 10.20 lakh (ex-showroom), features a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine delivering 88PS of power and 115Nm of torque. It offers options of a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT, with a CNG variant also available, delivering 73PS and 103Nm with a 5-speed MT and twin gas fuel tanks.
On the other hand, the Tata Punch EV is priced from Rs 10.99 lakh to Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It offers a standard variant with a 60kW motor, 25kWh battery pack, and 315km claimed range, along with a Long Range variant featuring a 90kW motor, 35kWh battery pack, and 421km claimed range.
Together with the Tata Nexon, the Tata Punch drives Tata Motors’ sales, with 170,076 units sold in FY24. At this pace, it is anticipated to surpass the 200,000 units annual sales milestone in FY25. Competing against models like the Hyundai Exter, Renault Kiger, and Nissan Magnite, the Tata Punch has carved a niche for itself in the Indian automotive market.
