On the fourth and final day, India chased down a target of 37 runs in the fourth innings, following a determined fightback from South Africa. The Indian spinners, Sneh Rana, Deepti Sharma, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad, combined effectively to dismiss South Africa for 373 after following on. South Africa had been bowled out for 266 in the first innings in response to India’s 603/6 declared.
Sneh Rana’s Stellar Performance
Off-spinner Sneh Rana, 30, achieved a match haul of 10 wickets, with figures of 10/188. This feat made her the second Indian woman to take a ten-wicket haul in Tests, following Jhulan Goswami’s 10/78 against England in 2006.
An elated Kaur said: “They batted well and did not give us an easy win and we had to work hard for it. Credit goes to Smriti and Shafali who set up a platform for us. Everyone in the team contributed with the bat. The way we fielded, it was not easy to field for so many overs in these conditions. Kudos to our bowlers, especially our spinners. They kept bowling and had that belief that they could take those wickets to win us the game.
South Africa’s Fightback
South Africa’s second innings saw notable contributions from Laura Wolvaardt (122), Sune Luus (109), Marizanne Kapp (31), and Nadine de Klerk (61). Despite their efforts, India’s spinners dominated. Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad took crucial wickets to secure the victory.
Closing the Match
India openers Shafali Verma (24) and Shubha Satheesh (13) quickly knocked off the target in 9.2 overs. Despite a delayed start due to drizzle, India maintained their momentum. Brilliant bowling in the final session, including part-time spinner Shafali Verma and Rajeshwari Gayakwad, ensured India’s triumphant finish.
