Manika Batra Optimistic About India’s Medal Prospects in the Paris Olympics
New Delhi: Table tennis star Manika Batra, who made history by winning gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, is confident about India’s chances at the upcoming Paris Olympics. Batra, a pivotal player in India’s qualification for the Paris Games—marking the first time Indian table tennis has achieved this feat—believes the team has a strong shot at winning a medal. Her recent performances, including reaching the quarter-finals of the WTT Saudi Smash by defeating top-ranked players, underscore her readiness and determination.
In an interview with Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT), Batra expressed her enthusiasm about the team’s progress and their preparation for the Olympics. She highlighted the historic nature of India’s qualification and the dedication of her teammates. “India qualifying for the first time is a huge achievement,” Batra said. She attributes the growth of Indian women’s table tennis to opportunities provided by UTT, which has facilitated practice with international players.
Reflecting on her Tokyo Olympics experience, Batra is focused on avoiding past mistakes and has adopted a more measured approach. “I have learned many things from the last Olympics, and I am not going to make those mistakes again. My mindset has changed; I am calmer and more confident,” she said. India will compete in both individual and team events in Paris, with Batra and other top players expected to join the IndianOil UTT 2024 in Chennai post-Olympics.
