Anurag Thakur’s Speech on Caste Census Supported by PM Modi

New Delhi: In a significant endorsement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised former Union minister Anurag Thakur’s Lok Sabha speech on the caste census, lauding him for effectively exposing the opposition INDIA bloc. PM Modi described Thakur’s address as a “must hear, commending its blend of facts and humour” on X. He highlighted Thakur’s critique of the opposition, calling it a perfect example of addressing “dirty politics.”

The controversy ignited when the Congress party, leading the opposition alliance, objected to Thakur’s remarks, questioning if they were made under the prime minister’s direction. The criticism centered around Thakur’s insinuation about Gandhi’s caste, despite not directly naming Rahul Gandhi. Thakur provocatively remarked, “Those whose caste is not known talk about the caste census,” referencing a former prime minister’s opposition to OBC reservation, hinting at Rajiv Gandhi without naming him.

Rahul Gandhi, the former Congress chief, responded sharply to Thakur’s insinuations, accusing him of insulting him. Gandhi reaffirmed his commitment to a nationwide caste census, a key election promise of the Congress for the 2024 general elections. He expressed resilience against what he perceived as attacks, stating, “Whoever raises the issues of Adivasi, Dalit, and the backward, is abused. I will happily accept these abuses.”

The caste census has become a contentious issue, with the Congress advocating it as a necessary X-ray of India to address socio-economic disparities. The debate continues to stir political waters as the country heads towards the next general elections.
