Aman Sehrawat Secures Bronze After Intensive Weight-Cutting Effort

New Delhi: Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat faced a tough challenge at the Paris Olympics 2024, but his determination and rigorous weight-cutting regimen led him to a bronze medal. After losing his semifinal match to Japan’s Rei Higuchi on August 8, Sehrawat had just 10 hours to make weight for his bronze medal bout. Weighing in at 61.5 kg, he was 4.5 kg over the 57 kg limit.

To address the situation, Sehrawat, aged 21, worked intensively with his coaches, Jagmander Singh and Virender Dahiya. Their strategy included a 1.5-hour wrestling session to stimulate sweating, followed by a 1-hour hot bath to aid weight loss. At 12:30 am, they moved to the gym for a continuous 1-hour run on the treadmill, followed by a 30-minute break. The weight-cutting process continued with five 5-minute sauna sessions.

Despite these efforts, Sehrawat was still 900 grams over the limit. To shed the remaining weight, he completed five 15-minute running sessions. By 4:30 am, he had achieved a weight of 56.9 kg, just under the limit.

Throughout the night, Sehrawat was kept hydrated with lukewarm water mixed with lemon, honey, and a bit of coffee. Coach Dahiya emphasized the stressful nature of the process, saying, “We kept checking his weight every hour and didn’t sleep throughout the night.” Sehrawat’s persistence paid off as he secured the wrestling team’s first medal of the Games, showcasing his resilience and dedication.
