Maharashtra Records 2,366 Farmer Suicides in 10 Months: Urgent Calls for Support

New Delhi: Between January and October this year, Maharashtra witnessed a distressing surge in farmer suicides, with 2,366 lives lost. The numbers reveal a staggering reality: almost 240 farmers ended their lives each month, amounting to seven tragic losses every day. The heart of this crisis lies in regions like Vidarbha, where 951 farmers in Amravati division and 257 in Nagpur division succumbed to immense pressures.

The State Assembly learned that other divisions—Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nashik, and Pune—also faced distressing losses, marking a total of 2,366 tragedies. Minister Anil Bhaidas Patil underscored that the government offers a financial aid of Rs 1 lakh to the families of the deceased farmers.

These distressing statistics have sparked intense discussions in the legislature, with opposition leader Vijay Wadettiwar calling for urgent action. Wadettiwar highlighted that over 3,000 farmers had taken their lives in a year due to crop failures and mounting debts, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support, including loan waivers and immediate aid for those affected by recent unseasonal rains.

The plight of these farmers demands immediate attention and action from authorities to alleviate their suffering and prevent further tragedies.
