Hyundai Inster EV Debuts Globally, Could Rival Tata Punch.ev in India
New Delhi: Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled its latest micro-electric SUV, the Inster, at the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show. The Hyundai Inster, measuring 3,825mm, is almost identical in length to the India-spec Hyundai Exter (3,815mm). Inspired by the Hyundai Casper, the Inster EV features a compact SUV design with clean surfaces. It includes LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs, pixel-graphic turn signals, and LED taillamps. The sporty look is accentuated by a dual-tone exterior paint scheme with a contrasting black roof. Wheel options include 15-inch steel wheels with covers, 15-inch alloys, and 17-inch alloys.
The interior of the Hyundai Inster EV boasts a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation, 64-color LED ambient lighting, a wireless charging dock, and an electric sunroof. The pixel theme continues inside with graphics on the steering wheel and customizable upper door trim garnishes. The front row seating offers walk-through access, and all seats can be folded flat, including the driver’s seat. Additional features include a front bench seat option, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The second-row seats are split 50/50 and can slide and recline.
The Hyundai Inster EV is available in several exterior colors, including Atlas White, Tomboy Khaki, Bijarim Khaki Matte, and Unbleached Ivory, with new options like Sienna Orange Metallic and Dusk Blue Matte. Interior trim choices include Black and two-tone Khaki Brown and Newtro Beige with full cloth trim. Sustainable materials are used throughout, with the exterior featuring recycled paint from waste tires and the interior using recycled PET from bottles and bio-polypropylene from sugarcane.
The Hyundai Inster EV comes with a standard 42kWh battery, while the Long Range version has a 49kWh battery. Both models feature a single motor, producing 97PS in the base variant and 115PS in the Long Range version, with torque at 147Nm. The Long Range version offers a claimed range of 355km (WLTP) and an estimated energy consumption of 15.3kWh/100 km (WLTP). With a 120kW DC charger, the vehicle can charge from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes. An 11kW on-board charger is standard, with a battery heating system and high-efficiency heat pump available.
The Hyundai Inster EV includes external and internal Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, providing power for external devices (110V/220V) and enabling bi-directional charging. Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is also featured for enhanced safety.
Initially launching in Korea later this year, the Hyundai Inster EV will follow in Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region. A future variant, the Inster Cross, will offer a more rugged design. While Hyundai has yet to confirm the Inster EV’s launch in India, if it does enter the market, it will compete with the Tata Punch.ev.
Hyundai currently offers the Ioniq 5 in India and plans to produce its first locally manufactured EV by 2025.
