Hyundai Verna Leads India’s Mid-Size Sedan Market Amid SUV Boom
New Delhi: With SUVs dominating the Indian car market, sedans have seen a significant decline. The SUV segment now holds over 50% of the market share, while sedans have dropped to less than 10%. The compact and mid-size sedan segments primarily drive sedan volumes, but the mid-size category has faced a challenging year.
According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the mid-size sedan segment experienced a 25.91% decline in sales, with 31,421 units sold between January and May 2024, compared to 42,407 units in the same period in 2023.
Key players in the mid-size sedan market include the Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, Honda City, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
Since its launch in March 2023, the sixth-generation Hyundai Verna has led the mid-size sedan segment. From January to May 2024, it achieved sales of 8,520 units. The Volkswagen Virtus followed with 8,150 units, Skoda Slavia with 6,419 units, Honda City with 5,301 units, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz with 3,031 units.
Priced between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 17.42 lakh (ex-showroom), the Hyundai Verna offers two engine options: a 1.5-litre MPi petrol (115PS and 143.8Nm) and a 1.5-litre Turbo GDi petrol (160PS and 253Nm). The MPi engine can be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or an intelligent variable transmission (IVT), while the Turbo GDi engine offers a choice between a 6-speed MT and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
The Hyundai Verna is equipped with numerous features, including a dark chrome parametric grille, Horizon LED positioning lamps and LED DRLs, connected parametric LED taillamps, and 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The interior boasts a power driver seat, heated and ventilated front seats, a switchable digital panel for infotainment and climate control, a 10.25-inch HD audio-video navigation system, a digital cluster with a colored TFT MID, a Bose premium sound system with eight speakers, a 64-color ambient light system, and an electric sunroof.
