In a heartfelt tribute to the late Osamu Suzuki, former Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) and Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) have announced plans to establish the Osamu Suzuki Centre of Excellence (OSCOE) in India. The proposed centres will be located in Gujarat and Haryana, and will focus on strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities while upholding the Japanese manufacturing philosophy that Mr. Suzuki championed throughout his illustrious career.
The announcement was made during a remembrance event held at Yashobhoomi, Delhi, honouring Mr. Osamu Suzuki, who passed away on December 25, 2024, in Japan. Revered as a pioneer of the small car revolution in India, Mr. Suzuki played a vital role in transforming the Indian automotive industry. His leadership helped embed Japanese manufacturing practices in Indian soil, fostering efficiency, inclusiveness, and sustainable growth.
The Osamu Suzuki Centre of Excellence (OSCOE) is envisioned as a collaborative platform between industry and academia, aimed at driving high-quality manufacturing growth and making India’s automotive supply chain globally competitive. The initiative will focus on uplifting component manufacturers across tier-1, tier-2, and tier-3 levels, ensuring that the benefits of global competitiveness are shared across the value chain.
Maruti Suzuki India stated that the centre will support the national objective of enhancing the country’s manufacturing capabilities. It will offer infrastructure, training, and capacity-building programmes rooted in Japanese practices such as Kaizen (continuous improvement), Genchi Genbutsu (go and see for yourself), and Monozukuri (craftsmanship).
The OSCOE will also foster innovation and research by building infrastructure in collaboration with educational institutions and technical experts. Through strategic partnerships, it aims to promote a culture of excellence, lean manufacturing, and inclusive workforce development.
Osamu Suzuki, who joined Suzuki Motor Corporation in 1958, was appointed President in 1978, and later served as Chairman from 2000, was the longest-serving leader of the company. His deep commitment to India helped lay the foundation of what is now the country’s largest car manufacturer.
The OSCOE stands as a lasting tribute to his legacy—dedicated to the development of human capital, industrial competitiveness, and the continued partnership between India and Japan.
