Volkswagen Unveils Tharu XR SUV on Taigun Platform

New Delhi: Volkswagen has unveiled the first images and details of its all-new Tharu XR SUV. Unlike the larger Tharu SUV sold in some international markets, the Tharu XR is essentially a slightly extended version of the Taigun available in India.

The Tharu XR features a spacious five-seat cabin and is powered by a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine. It shares design elements with the latest Volkswagen SUVs, providing a modern and cohesive look. Built on the same emerging market-specific MQB A0 platform as the Taigun, Kushaq, Slavia, and Virtus in India, the Tharu XR has a wheelbase of 2651mm, identical to these models.

However, the Tharu XR is 134mm longer than the Taigun, measuring 4,355mm in length. This additional length is evident behind the rear wheels, giving the Tharu XR a more balanced appearance and a slightly slanted rear tailgate compared to the Taigun’s upright design.

In terms of design, the Tharu XR’s doors and most body panels resemble those of the Taigun, including the new-look headlamps, grille, and front bumper. The Tharu XR stands out with dark-tinted, connected tail-lamps with transparent lenses, providing a more upscale look than its Indian counterpart. The rear bumper is larger and features more contrasting faux-aluminium accents.

The Tharu XR will be equipped with a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine in multiple states of tune. While the interior has not been revealed, it is expected to closely resemble the Taigun’s cabin, with some cosmetic changes and additional features. It is yet to be confirmed if the Tharu XR will offer a five-seat configuration with a larger boot or include an extra row of seats to accommodate six or seven passengers.

Initially, the Tharu XR will be exclusive to the Chinese market, with no current plans for an Indian release.
