Controversy Surrounding Ram Temple Consecration: Religious Leaders Criticize Political Influence

New Delhi: Religious leaders have voiced concerns over the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) handling of the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation is being labeled as a move for “political gains.”

Nischalananda Saraswati, the 145th Jagadguru Shankaracharya of the Purvamnaya Govardhana Peetham of Puri (Odisha), expressed discontent over Modi’s involvement in the consecration ceremony. He stated, “When Modi ji will do the consecration at the temple and will touch the idol, will I be going there to clap.” However, he acknowledged Modi for respecting ‘Sanatan Dharma.’

Similarly, Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, the 1008 Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth in Uttarakhand, criticized the inauguration of the partially constructed temple as a move driven by political motives. He emphasized that such actions deviate from established traditions where political and religious leaders remain separate.

Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati argued that the consecration ceremony in Ayodhya lacks adherence to Hindu traditions, particularly since the temple is not fully constructed. He also responded to Champat Rai’s statement, challenging the ownership claim of the Ram Temple based on sects, urging Rai to resign if the temple is associated with the Ramanand sect.

In conclusion, these religious leaders underscored the importance of preserving traditions and criticized any attempt to blend political influence with religious ceremonies, urging a separation between political and religious spheres.
