Fatal Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express Derailment in UP Claims Lives, Injures Dozens; Rescue Operations Underway
New Delhi: In a tragic incident today, the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed near Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh, claiming the lives of at least four individuals and injuring over 25 passengers. The derailment occurred between Gonda and Jhilahi stations, with ten coaches of the train overturning, including several AC coaches.
The accident occurred around 2:40 PM, prompting swift responses from local authorities and railway officials. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath promptly took cognizance of the situation and directed immediate relief efforts. He ordered the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Lucknow and Balrampur to assist in rescue operations. Additionally, a fleet of ambulances has been dispatched to transport the injured to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving necessary medical attention.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has also been briefed on the incident, with the Assam government maintaining close coordination with Uttar Pradesh authorities to monitor the situation and provide support as needed.
Railway officials, including Pankaj Singh, CPRO of North Eastern Railway, confirmed that a medical van and rescue operations were swiftly initiated upon receiving reports of the derailment. Helpline numbers have been issued by Indian Railways and the Lucknow division of North Eastern Railways to assist passengers and their families affected by the incident.
This tragic derailment comes just a month after another significant railway accident in West Bengal, underlining the ongoing challenges faced by India’s rail infrastructure.
