Tragic Train Accident in West Bengal: 9 Dead, 50 Injured

New Delhi: A devastating train accident in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district has claimed the lives of nine individuals, including three railway employees, and left approximately 50 others injured. The incident occurred this morning when the Kanchanjunga Express, traveling from Agartala in Tripura to Sealdah in Kolkata, was struck from behind by a goods train near Rangapani station, close to New Jalpaiguri. The collision resulted in the derailment of three coaches of the Kanchanjunga Express.

One factor that helped limit the number of casualties was the configuration of the train. The rear section, which suffered the brunt of the impact, consisted of a parcel coach and the guard’s coach, with passenger compartments positioned further ahead experiencing less damage.

Railway Board Chairperson Jaya Verma Sinha informed the media that the accident occurred around 9 am. She confirmed that the rescue operations have been completed and the injured have been transported to North Bengal Medical College for treatment. “The injured are receiving the best possible care,” Sinha stated.

The front portion of the Kanchanjunga Express, which remained unaffected by the collision, is set to resume its journey soon, ensuring that passengers can reach their destinations.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and concern over the incident, stating, “I am shocked to learn about the tragic train accident in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are still emerging, it is reported that the Kanchanjunga Express was hit by a goods train. Disaster response teams, doctors, ambulances, and senior officials have been dispatched to the site for rescue and recovery operations.”

This tragic accident underscores the critical importance of railway safety and prompt emergency response to minimize loss of life and provide immediate assistance to the injured.
