Adani Power Unveils Major Expansion with 1600 MW Thermal Power Plant in Uttar Pradesh

Adani Power

New Delhi: Adani Power, a prominent player in India’s energy sector and the country’s leading private thermal power producer, is set to significantly bolster its thermal power generation capacity with the establishment of a new 1600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. This ambitious project marks a pivotal step in the company’s strategy to double its thermal power capacity from its current 15.25 GW to approximately 30 GW by 2030.

Project Overview and Investment

The forthcoming power plant, which will consist of two units each with a capacity of 800 MW, is a greenfield project being developed by Adani Power’s subsidiary, Mirzapur Thermal Energy (UP) Pvt Ltd. The total estimated investment for this project is around Rs 14,000 crore, reflecting the substantial financial commitment required to establish a state-of-the-art thermal power facility. This investment aligns with the prevailing costs for setting up greenfield thermal power plants, which are estimated at Rs 8-9 crore per MW.

The decision to build this plant is part of Adani Power’s broader vision to expand its thermal power portfolio. Currently, the company is in the process of increasing its thermal power capacity from 15.25 GW to 16.85 GW, with the goal of reaching 30.67 GW by the end of the decade.

Historical Context and Acquisition

The site for this new power plant was originally intended for a 1320 MW supercritical coal-based power project by Welspun Group’s Welspun Energy UP Pvt Ltd. However, following the acquisition of Welspun Energy by Adani Infra in 2019, the project was rebranded as Mirzapur Thermal Energy (UP) Pvt Ltd (MTEUPL). This acquisition, completed in June of this year, has enabled Adani Power to take over and proceed with the development of the plant.

Partnerships and Equipment

In a significant development, Adani Power has awarded a major contract for the manufacture and supply of the main plant equipment and associated auxiliaries to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL). The contract, valued at Rs 3500 crore, also includes the supervision of the erection and commissioning of the plant by BHEL. This partnership underscores the collaboration between state-owned and private enterprises in advancing India’s energy infrastructure.

Strategic Expansion and Future Plans

The Mirzapur power plant will not only enhance Adani Power’s generation capacity but also extend its geographical footprint in India. The company’s long-term strategy involves a substantial expansion of its thermal power assets, reflected in its planned capacity addition projections of over 80 GW.

Adani Power is also progressing with a 1600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power expansion project at its existing 1370 MW facility in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. This expansion reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing its thermal power capabilities and meeting growing energy demands.
