Semiconductor manufacturing in Assam will put state on global map, says Ratan Tata

New Delhi: Ratan Tata stated that semiconductor manufacturing in Assam will put the state on the global map. The move is expected to significantly boost Assam’s economy and establish it as a key player in the high-tech manufacturing sector. With this development, Assam could become an important hub for semiconductor production, attracting investments and creating job opportunities, while contributing to India’s goal of becoming self-reliant in semiconductor technology.

Ratan Tata stated that the manufacturing of semiconductors in Assam will put the state on the global map. His conglomerate has invested Rs 27,000 crore in a semiconductor plant in Jagiroad. This significant investment is expected to boost Assam’s economy, create job opportunities, and establish the state as a key player in the global semiconductor industry.

Ratan Tata posted on his X timeline that the investments being made in Assam will transform the state into a center for complex cancer care. He mentioned that the state government of Assam, in partnership with the Tata group, will make Assam a major player in sophisticated semiconductors. He attached pictures of himself, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran.

The Tata group, in collaboration with the Assam government, has already established several cancer care hospitals across the state. This new venture into semiconductor manufacturing further signifies their commitment to the state’s development.

Ratan Tata’s X post added, “This new development will put Assam on the global map. We wish to thank the Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, for his support and vision that has made all this possible.”

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured that the first semiconductor chip made in India will be rolled out by December 2024. He noted that the first attempt at semiconductor manufacturing in India was made as far back as 1962, but it was only with the right policies and conviction that progress could be achieved. Vaishnaw emphasized Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to advancing electronics manufacturing as part of the vision for a developed India, highlighting the need for semiconductors in various sectors, from TVs to power electronics.

On March 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stones for three semiconductor facilities with a total investment of around Rs 1.25 lakh crore—two in Gujarat and one in Assam. The Tata Group is setting up two of these plants, one in each state.

The semiconductor industry in India is still in its nascent stage, with both local and multinational companies exploring its vast potential. This initiative represents a significant step towards establishing India as a major player in the global semiconductor market.

Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) is setting up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, with a capacity to produce 48 million chips per day. The facility, which is being built with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, will cater to various segments including automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was present at the foundation stone ceremony, highlighted that previous industrial revolutions had not considered the northeastern region of India for business opportunities. This development marks a significant shift in the region’s industrial landscape.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the region, previously neglected, is now included in the technological revolution by Prime Minister Modi.

The Tata Group anticipates that commercial production of semiconductor chips at the two plants—one in Gujarat and one in Assam—will begin in 2026. The chip shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need for indigenous manufacturing to address deficiencies, support national security, and foster local innovation.

In addition, American chip maker Micron’s high-end semiconductor fabrication plant in Sanand, Gujarat, which is India’s first, is progressing rapidly and is expected to be operational by late 2024.
