Kalki 2898 AD: A Record-Breaking Sci-Fi Spectacle Blending Indian Mythology with Western Science Fiction

New Delhi: Prabhas much-anticipated film Kalki 2898 AD has set the box office on fire, making history as the biggest opener of 2024. The film earned around Rs 54 crore in India on its second day, bringing its total collection to a staggering Rs 150 crore. With an overall 65.02% Telugu occupancy on Friday, June 28, the film’s success underscores the immense anticipation and fan following it has garnered.

In her review for India TV, Sakshi Verma describes Kalki 2898 AD as a pure visual spectacle where Indian mythology meets western science fiction. The film, which took four years to produce, draws inspiration from characters in the Mahabharata, focusing on the immortal fighter Ashwatthama in the lead role.

Verma praises the film’s visual effects, cinematic experience, and surprising cameos. Directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, the film features Prabhas in the lead role, with Deepika Padukone as Sumathi, whose subtle and expressive performance adds depth to the narrative. However, it is Amitabh Bachchan who steals the show with his portrayal of Ashwatthama.

According to Verma, the film’s writing is its unique selling point. With cameo appearances by Mrunal Thakur, Vijay Deverakonda, Dulquer Salmaan, SS Rajamouli, and Ram Gopal Verma, the film is rich with mythological references, including Surya Putra Karna and the “wind set down” phenomenon with Deepika.
