MUNJYA: Folklore-Inspired Horror-Comedy Delight!

New Delhi: “Munjya” is a fresh addition to Indian folklore-inspired films, blending horror and comedy with a tale from Maharashtra’s Konkan region. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, the story revolves around Bittu (Abhay Verma), a timid man possessed by the spirit of a demon seeking marriage to find peace. Supported by his cousin Diljit (Taran Singh), psychic Elvis Karim Prabhakar (Sathyaraj), and spirited grandmother (Suhas Joshi), Bittu navigates his comedic attempts to woo Bela (Sharvari Wagh) while battling the supernatural entity.

The film’s animation, reminiscent of Harry Potter and Gollum, is commendable, enhancing the eerie atmosphere. Despite initial dark tones, the film leans into comedy as it progresses, occasionally sidelining the darker aspects of the story. Nevertheless, it remains engaging, with Abhay Verma’s apt portrayal of a bewildered protagonist and a well-matched ensemble cast.

Sharvari Wagh shines in the latter half, and Sathyaraj’s underutilized character leaves room for standalone exploration. While the film may lack coherence in tone, it delivers entertainment through its unique blend of horror and comedy. With captivating visuals and inspired acting, “Munjya” offers a twisted yet enjoyable cinematic experience, inviting audiences to delve into its folklore-infused narrative.
