‘My Melbourne’ Anthology Movie to Launch 2024 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne

New Delhi: The highly anticipated anthology film ‘My Melbourne,’ featuring shorts by acclaimed filmmakers Kabir Khan, Imtiaz Ali, Onir, and Rima Das, will inaugurate the 15th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). The festival, set to take place from August 15 to 25, 2024, will celebrate the diversity and richness of Indian cinema. ‘My Melbourne,’ an Indo-Australian collaboration, is supported by Vic Screen and Screen Australia.

Inspired by true events, ‘My Melbourne’ delves into the multicultural fabric of Melbourne, exploring themes of race, gender, sexuality, and disability through four distinct stories. The anthology includes “Emma” by Rima Das, focusing on disability; ‘Jules’ by Imtiaz Ali, depicting the lives of two displaced women; “Nandini” by Onir, celebrating Melbourne’s diversity; and “Setara” by Kabir Khan, recounting an Afghan refugee’s journey.

Rima Das expressed her aim to keep her film “authentic and real,” featuring both seasoned and new actors, including members of the deaf community. She hopes the film sparks dialogue about inclusivity. Imtiaz Ali reflected on his experience, praising the collaborative effort with a diverse team and sharing his excitement about ‘Jules.’

Onir highlighted the celebration of diversity and inclusion, key aspects of Melbourne’s identity, through his film. Kabir Khan focused on the resilience of Setara, who found belonging in Melbourne through cricket after escaping Afghanistan. The filmmakers aim to showcase the varied migrant experiences and the spirit of Melbourne, setting the tone for a diverse cinematic experience at IFFM 2024.
