Rishab Shetty Criticizes Bollywood for Negative Portrayal of India; Reddit Flags Kantara Scene
New Delhi: Actor-director Rishab Shetty has sparked controversy with his recent remarks criticizing Bollywood for its negative portrayal of India. In an interview with MetroSaga, Shetty, who is known for his work in Kannada cinema, expressed his belief that Bollywood often depicts India in a negative light. He emphasized his commitment to presenting his nation, state, and language positively through his work, stating, “Indian films, particularly Bollywood, often portray India negatively. These so-called art films get showcased at international events and receive special attention. For me, my nation, my state, and my language are sources of pride. I believe in presenting them in a positive light to the world, and that’s exactly what I strive to do.”
Rishabh Shetty’s comments have drawn mixed reactions online, with many expressing dissatisfaction. A Reddit post has further fueled the debate, highlighting a scene from Shetty’s own film, Kantara. The clip in question shows Rishabh Shetty pinching co-star Sapthami Gowda’s waist, which some viewers have interpreted as uncomfortable and inappropriate. The Reddit post, titled “Meanwhile Rishabh Shetty in his own film,” includes comments critiquing the normalization of sexual harassment in Indian cinema.
One viewer noted, “Also another scene where he was peeking when she is bathing. It was really uncomfortable to watch; no doubt the movie was great, but sexual harassment is too normalized in Indian cinema.” This juxtaposition of Rishabh Shetty’s criticisms with the controversial scene from his film has intensified the ongoing discussion about representation and conduct in Indian cinema.
