AIIMS and Safdarjung Doctors Extend Strike in Protest of Kolkata Medic Rape-Murder
New Delhi: Several city hospitals, including AIIMS and Safdarjung, maintained their strike in protest against the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) of AIIMS, VMMC, Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia, and Indira Gandhi Hospital have continued their strike for a third consecutive day, leading to the closure of outpatient departments (OPDs), operation theatres (OTs), and wards.
The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), after consultations with RDAs from across various states and Institutes of National Importance, has pledged its support to the ongoing strike. FAIMA has condemned the brutal murder and announced that the strike will continue until justice is served.
In contrast, the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has ended its strike following a meeting with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda. The decision to resume normal operations was made in consideration of patient welfare. During the meeting, the health minister agreed to form a committee involving FORDA to work on the Central Protection Act, with the ministry promising to initiate this process within the next 15 days.
Doctors at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital and Maulana Azad Medical College have also resumed their duties. The tragic incident that triggered the protests involved the rape and murder of a 32-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Her semi-naked body was discovered in a seminar hall on the night of August 8, sparking widespread outrage and demand for increased safety measures for medical professionals.
