Assam Police Files FIR Against ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ for Route Deviation

New Delhi: In developments that took place during the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra’ organized by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Assam Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the yatra and its main organizer KB Byju. The complaint alleged that the march deviated from its permitted route within Jorhat city, leading to a chaotic situation and violating established norms.

A nationwide initiative aimed at symbolically uniting the country has faced legal trouble as it deviated from the approved path, leading to a stampede-like situation. An FIR was immediately lodged at the Jorhat Sadar police station, stating that the yatra failed to follow the norms of the district administration and violated road safety rules.

Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia dismissed the FIR as an attempt to hamper the progress of the yatra. He highlighted the absence of police managing the traffic diversion at the PWD point and justified the route taken by the yatra due to the inadequacy of the designated route for adequate crowding. Saikia accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of being afraid of the success of the Yatra in Assam and trying to hinder its progress.

Despite the legal hurdle, the Yatra is set to continue its journey across Assam till January 25, covering a distance of 833 kilometers across 17 districts. The nationwide yatra, starting from Manipur on January 14 and ending in Mumbai on March 20, is planned to cover a distance of 6,713 kilometers passing through 110 districts in 15 states, symbolizing a journey towards national unity.
