Bishan Singh Bedi: Indian cricket legend dies aged 77

Delhi: Bishan Singh Bedi, a former captain of the Indian cricket team and one of the most recognized spinners to have played for the country, died on October 23. He was 77 years old.He was battling age-related illnesses and had undergone a few surgeries in recent years.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement to confirm Bedi’s demise and mark its condolences. “BCCI mourns the sad demise of former India Test Captain and legendary spinner, Bishan Singh Bedi. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and fans in these tough times. May his soul rest in peace,” the country’s nodal cricket body stated.

Bishan Singh Bedi, the legendary Indian spinner, is a name etched in the annals of cricket history. Born on September 25, 1946, in Amritsar, he embarked on a remarkable journey that would make him one of India’s greatest cricketers.

Bedi’s elegant left-arm spin bowling mesmerized cricket enthusiasts worldwide. He made his debut for the Indian national team in 1966 and went on to represent the country for nearly two decades. Known for his impeccable line and length, Bedi claimed 266 wickets in just 67 Test matches.

Beyond his on-field exploits, Bedi was a cricketer of impeccable integrity. His unwavering commitment to fair play and sportsmanship set him apart. Post-retirement, he transitioned into coaching, mentoring future stars and advocating for cricket’s purity.

Bedi had also featured in 10 One-Day International (ODI) matches, in which he took seven wickets. He was said to be as instrumental in the team’s first ODI victory, during the 1975 World Cup, when he ended up with magical figures of 12-8-6-1 against East Africa.
