“Controversial figure Gurmeet Ram Rahim granted temporary release amid legal turmoil”

New Delhi: In a surprise turn of events, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been granted three weeks of remission from his 20-year jail sentence for raping two female disciples. This marks another temporary release for the 56-year-old leader, who is currently lodged in Sunaria jail in Haryana’s Rohtak district.

The controversy surrounding Singh’s case has deepened as he is set to spend his 21-day release at the Dera Sacha Sauda Ashram in Barnawa, located in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. The move follows previous temporary releases, including a 30-day parole granted in July and a 40-day parole granted in both January and October last year.

However, the legal saga does not end here. In 2021, Singh faced sentencing for conspiring with four others to murder Dera manager Ranjit Singh. Additionally, in 2019, he and three others were convicted of the murder of a journalist that occurred more than 16 years ago.

Given the seriousness of the charges against them, the pattern of temporary release raises eyebrows. Singh’s history includes 40 days’ parole in June last year, one month’s parole in January and three weeks’ furlough starting from February 7, 2022.

As the public inquiry continues, questions arise as to the reasons behind these periodic releases for a person accused of such serious criminal charges. The case highlights not only the legal complexities, but also the larger debate about how the justice system handles high-profile cases.

The story of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is full of legal twists and turns, leading many to wonder about the complexities associated with his case and the implications of his intermittent freedom.
