Delhi Dominates Crime Charts: Highest Incidents in 2022

New Delhi: In a stark revelation, Delhi has emerged as the hub of criminal activities among major metropolitan cities of India, according to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year 2022. An average of 34 criminal cases were registered in Delhi . A worrying picture of safety and security is emerging every day.

Delhi’s crime rate rose to 1,832.6 crimes per 100,000 residents, the highest in the country and much higher than the national rate of 258.1. The enormity of this figure becomes clear when it is compared with the second-ranked city, Jaipur, which reported crimes at a rate of 916.7, only half that of Delhi. Indore, the third ranked city, had a rate of 767.8.

The city’s crime data is mainly dominated by theft cases, which account for 68.74% of all reported incidents. While Delhi saw a slight increase (3.43%) in total crimes compared to the previous year, the data shows a more significant increase (21.6%) compared to 2020, when the decline was due to the stringent lockdown induced by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite Delhi Police’s commitment towards ease of reporting crimes, there were delays in filing charge sheets, with charge sheets filed in only 30.2% of all cases. This is in stark contrast to cities like Kochi (95.9%) and Patna (89.9%), which lead the charts in this regard.

What is worrying is that Delhi has also acquired the dubious distinction of being the most unsafe city for women, with the highest number of crimes against women recorded. With an average of three rapes a day and 14,158 cases of crimes against women, 29.04% of such crimes recorded in 19 major cities across the country were in Delhi.

As the capital grapples with an alarming rise in murder cases and cyber crimes, the need for comprehensive strategies to ensure the safety of its residents has never been greater. The city’s challenges extend far beyond traditional crimes, including a worrying rise in crimes against senior citizens and children, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the security issues facing Delhi.
