Delhi’s Grim Reality: Epidemic of Violence Against Women Persists Unchecked

New Delhi: In 2022, Delhi recorded a staggering 14,158 cases of crimes against women, marking it as the most unsafe metro city in India for the third consecutive year. Shockingly, this accounted for about 186.9 crimes reported per 100,000 women. The situation seems dire, with an average of three rape cases reported daily.

The National Crime Records Bureau’s report unveiled an alarming 4% rise in crime against women nationwide, hitting a steep 12.3% increase in metro cities. Uttar Pradesh, followed by Maharashtra and Rajasthan, reported the highest cases. Despite various initiatives, Delhi remains a hotbed for such atrocities.

Anjali Singh’s tragic hit-and-run, reminiscent of Nirbhaya’s horrific incident, shook the nation. Despite stricter laws post-Nirbhaya, safety remains a luxury in the capital. Delhi’s law and order fall under the central government, yet incidents like Anjali’s highlight the glaring gaps in safety measures.

The glaring gender disparities in Delhi’s workforce and societal expectations further compound the issue. Victim-blaming, inadequate policing, and political apathy continue to plague efforts to combat these crimes.

The need for holistic solutions addressing socioeconomic disparities and cultural norms is urgent. It’s a call for collective action, demanding a safer, more inclusive Delhi for all women.
