“Delhi’s water crisis: Tug of war between government and bureaucracy”
New Delhi: In the heart of India’s bustling capital Delhi, a clash between the elected government and the bureaucratic machinery threatens essential water projects. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) finds itself at the center of this storm, as important initiatives like upgrading of sewage treatment plants and rejuvenation of Yamuna river are hanging in the balance.
The controversy revolves around Finance Secretary Ashish Verma’s decision to stop the release of critical funds for these projects. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has warned over the growing water crisis and accused Verma of obstructing the second installment of grants and loans to DJB. Water and Finance Minister Atishi has gone a step further and demanded suspension of Verma and intervention of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
However, Verma defends his stance, insisting that funds are released based on project progress and accountability measures. They claim that DJB’s core services, including water and sewage treatment, will continue without any disruption.
The impact of this bureaucratic tussle is already being felt. Atishi warned of a potential public health crisis as vendors refuse routine maintenance work due to payment delays. DJB Contractors Welfare Association has expressed concern over the water supply in slum areas and has also threatened to stop the ongoing projects.
