FIR Lodged Against Contractor, Consultant After Shivaji Maharaj Statue Collapse

New Delhi: A case has been registered by the police in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district against the contractor and the structural consultant involved in the construction of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue, which recently collapsed. The incident occurred on Monday at around 1 pm, when the 35-foot statue, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Navy Day last year at Rajkot Fort in Malvan tehsil, fell unexpectedly.

The statue, a tribute to the 17th-century Maratha warrior king, had been a significant symbol of pride for the region. Its collapse has not only caused embarrassment to the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government but also sparked a wave of criticism from opposition parties.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the issue, stating that the statue was designed and constructed by the Indian Navy, distancing his administration from the technical responsibilities. Despite this, the incident has raised concerns about the quality of construction and the accountability of those involved in such high-profile projects.

The registration of the FIR against the contractor and structural consultant marks the beginning of a legal investigation into the causes of the collapse. The incident has prompted calls for a thorough review of the construction processes and the roles of various stakeholders, as well as questions about the oversight and safety standards maintained during the project. The case is likely to draw significant attention as more details emerge and responsibility is assigned for the failure of a monument dedicated to one of India’s most revered historical figures.
