Goa CM Seeks Centre’s Action as Airlines Move Operations from Dabolim Airport
New Delhi: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has expressed his government’s concerns to the Centre regarding the ongoing shift of airline operations from the Dabolim International Airport to the newly opened Mopa Airport in Pernem taluka. The Mopa Airport, which became operational early last year, has attracted several airlines, leading to a reduction in flights and activities at the older Dabolim Airport, which has long served as Goa’s primary aviation hub.
During a meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu in New Delhi, Sawant raised these concerns, emphasizing the potential impact on the state’s economy and connectivity. The Chief Minister was accompanied by key members of his cabinet, including Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho and Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte. The discussions also involved Murlidhar Mohol, the junior civil aviation minister, further highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
An official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) revealed that Sawant and his team urged the central government to consider measures to ensure that Dabolim Airport continues to operate robustly alongside the new Mopa Airport. The shift in airline operations has raised worries about the future viability of the Dabolim Airport, which is strategically located and historically significant for both domestic and international travel to Goa.
Sawant’s government is concerned that the reduction in operations at Dabolim could adversely affect tourism and business travel, which are vital to Goa’s economy. The state leadership is seeking a balanced approach that allows both airports to function effectively, thereby maintaining Goa’s connectivity and economic stability.
