Historic milestone: Hindu woman breaks barriers to file nomination for general elections in Pakistan

New Delhi: In an unprecedented move, Savera Prakash, a Hindu woman from Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has broken the stereotype by filing her nomination papers for a general seat in Pakistan’s upcoming 2024 elections. These elections, to be held on February 8, 2024, come at a crucial moment as Prakash is entering the political arena, with his eyes on the general seat of PK-25 in Buner district.

Savera Prakash, a 2022 graduate of Abbottabad International Medical College, has a legacy of political involvement, inspired by her father Om Prakash, a dedicated member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for 35 years. As general secretary of the PPP women’s wing in Buner, Prakash expresses optimism about contesting the elections on a PPP ticket, which shows her commitment towards the welfare of the community.

Beyond political affiliations, Prakash is driven by a passion for community service, especially advocating for women’s rights and creating a safe environment. Aiming to address the historical neglect and oppression of women in the development sector, Prakash emphasized her dedication to working for the underprivileged, drawing on her background in medicine and first-hand experiences in government hospitals.

Savera Prakash’s nomination has received widespread support cutting across political boundaries. Social media influencer Imran Noshad Khan praised her for challenging traditional patriarchy and breaking barriers in the region where it took 55 years for Buner to merge with Pakistan. The recent amendment made by the Election Commission of Pakistan, mandating inclusion of five per cent women candidates on general seats, further underlines the significance of Prakash’s historic candidature.
