Hundreds Feared Trapped as Massive Landslides Hit Wayanad, Kerala
New Delhi: Massive landslides have struck several hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad district, Kerala, early Tuesday, resulting in widespread devastation and raising concerns that hundreds may be trapped. So far, 19 people have been reported dead as rescue efforts continue amid challenging conditions.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has been swift in responding to the disaster. They have deployed multiple teams, including Fireforce and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), to the affected regions. Additionally, another NDRF team is en route to Wayanad to bolster the ongoing rescue operations.
In a statement on Facebook, the KSDMA mentioned that two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been instructed to assist in the rescue efforts. The situation is dire, with local reports indicating that many people are feared trapped under the debris. The continuous heavy rainfall is exacerbating the situation, making rescue operations increasingly difficult.
Approximately 250 personnel from various agencies, including Fire and Rescue, Civil Defence, NDRF, and the Local Emergency Response Team, are actively involved in the rescue operation in the Churalmala area of Wayanad. These teams are working tirelessly to locate and assist those trapped in the landslide-affected regions. Given the challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, the operation is complex and dangerous.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid traveling to the affected areas to facilitate the smooth functioning of rescue efforts and to ensure the safety of all involved.
