INDIA Bloc Launches Nationwide Protest Against Unprecedented Suspension of MPs; Rahul Gandhi to Address Gathering at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: In a bold show of dissent, the Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (India) bloc is today leading nationwide protests over what they call the “undemocratic” suspension of 146 MPs during the winter session of Parliament. Prominent leaders including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party president Rahul Gandhi will participate in the protest starting at 11 am at Delhi’s iconic Jantar Mantar.

The unprecedented wave of suspensions came amid turmoil following the breach of Parliament security on December 13, prompting a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Three additional opposition MPs were subsequently suspended from the Lok Sabha, creating a record for the highest number of suspensions in parliamentary history.

The protest comes after a symbolic march by opposition MPs, including suspended MPs, from Parliament to Vijay Chowk as a mark of protest against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Kharge, while addressing a protest earlier, called on the government to “behave in a democratic manner” and said the ruling BJP lacked faith in the democratic process.

Echoing the discontent across the country, simultaneous protests are scheduled at district headquarters. The central demand is the restoration of parliamentary decorum and accountability, emphasizing the need for transparent communication on important issues, especially those related to national security.
