J-K to Criminalize Content Promoting Terrorism and Disharmony Soon.

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP), RR Swain, announced on Thursday that sharing content on social media that promotes disharmony or disrupts the security situation in the Union Territory (UT) will soon be treated as a criminal offense.

The statement comes in the wake of a case where a student allegedly posted offensive content on social media, prompting the Jammu and Kashmir Police to initiate an investigation, with the case expected to reach a legal resolution.

DGP Swain emphasized that individuals posting content on social media, such as posts, videos, or audio that endorse separatism, terrorism, or communal tensions, will face charges under a new law falling under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

He urged the public to remain vigilant against the designs of anti-national elements attempting to exploit the situation and disturb law and order in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing concerns about attempts by Pakistan to disrupt the atmosphere in the UT, DGP Swain affirmed that there was no doubt about such efforts, with numerous messages originating from across the border and circulating on social media. He highlighted the involvement of certain individuals in activities aimed at disturbing the established peace in the region and sought cooperation from the public to thwart such nefarious activities.
