Delhi: The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has reached a remarkable milestone today, providing tap water connections to 13 Crore rural households in just four years. Launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on August 15, 2019, this initiative has rapidly expanded rural tap connection coverage from 3.23 Crore households in August 2019. Several states and union territories, including Goa, Telangana, Haryana, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Daman & Diu, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, have achieved 100% coverage. Bihar is at 96.39%, and Mizoram is at 92.12%, on track for full coverage.

The JJM, a collaborative effort between the central government, states, union territories, and development partners, installs one tap water connection per second, with 87,500 daily connections since January 1, 2023. Uttar Pradesh leads with 61.05 lakh Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) installed in the current fiscal year. The mission also extends tap water supply to 88.73% of schools and 84.69% of anganwadi centers, benefiting rural communities. In aspirational districts, tap water access has surged from 7.86% to 66.48%.

The ‘Har Ghar Jal’ initiative has brought socio-economic benefits, freeing women and girls from the burden of water-fetching, allowing time for income generation and supporting children’s education. Community participation is key to sustainability, with 5.27 lakh Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSC)/Pani Samitis and 5.12 lakh Village Action Plans (VAPs) formed.

Safe drinking water is now available in previously contaminated habitations, impacting millions. Water quality is regularly tested to ensure safety, earning recognition for the Department’s use of emerging technologies. The Jal Jeevan Mission operates under the motto “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas” and actively works towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 by providing safe tap water to all rural households, schools, anganwadis, and public institutions.
