Nobel Peace Prize 2023 awarded to jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi for her ‘fight to promote human rights’

Delhi: The Nobel Peace Prize 2023 has been awarded to Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all, the Swedish Academy in Stockholm announced on Friday.

In 1998, Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi was jailed by the country’s theocratic authorities for the first time while protesting the rampant imprisonment of voices critical of the administration. In 2023, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, while still in prison. Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs. Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.

In 2022, the Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatski, the Russian human rights group Memorial, and the Ukrainian human rights group Center for Civil Liberties shared the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Prizes are what?

Physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace are all recognized by the illustrious Nobel Prizes. Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor known for his dynamite inventions, left behind his legacy through these honors after his death in 1896. The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was first awarded by the central bank of Sweden in 1968.
