Over 700 Pilgrims Rescued from Kedarnath Route After Cloudburst

New Delhi: Heavy rains in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand on Wednesday night have caused significant damage to the Kedarnath route, stranding many pilgrims. Rescue and relief efforts are in full swing, with authorities working tirelessly to evacuate the affected individuals. According to the Uttarakhand police, 737 people were rescued by helicopter, and at least 2,670 were taken to Sonprayag as of Thursday.

The Uttarakhand police, in a post on their official X handle, stated, “The rescue work of people stranded on the Shri Kedarnath Dham Yatra route is continuing. 737 passengers were rescued by helicopter throughout the day. 2,670 passengers were taken to Sonprayag. SDRF, NDRF, DDRF, District Police, and Administration teams are selflessly helping the devotees.”

Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar provided updates on the situation, noting the heavy rainfall in the Tehri and Rudraprayag districts. He mentioned that the Kedarnath Yatra had been suspended for two days due to adverse weather conditions, with 12 NDRF and 60 SDRF teams engaged in rescue operations. He also highlighted the efforts to restrict pilgrim movement on the Yamunotri and Kedarnath trek routes for safety reasons.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inspected the rain-affected areas, observing significant damage to roads, footbridges, power lines, and agricultural land. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of staying alert, urging officials to remain vigilant and ensuring the safety of all travelers. The situation remains critical, with continuous efforts being made to manage the disaster’s impact.
