PM Modi Commemorates 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Kargil War Memorial in Dras to mark the 25th anniversary of Vijay Diwas, paying tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. Addressing the Shradhanjali Samaroh, PM Modi highlighted the valor and resilience demonstrated by Indian forces, stating, “In Kargil, we not only won the war, but we also set a remarkable example of truth, restraint, and strength. Falsehood and terror were defeated by the power of truth.”
Taking a firm stance against Pakistan, Modi asserted, “Pakistan has faced defeat for all its immoral and shameful attempts in the past. However, it has not learned from its history.” His comments underscore the continued tension between the two nations and reflect on Pakistan’s failure to acknowledge the lessons from the Kargil conflict.
In addition to his commemorative speech, PM Modi marked the occasion by virtually initiating the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project. This ambitious infrastructure project involves the construction of a 4.1-kilometer-long twin-tube tunnel at an altitude of approximately 15,800 feet on the Nimu-Padum-Darcha road. Once completed, the Shinkun La Tunnel will be the highest tunnel in the world, enhancing all-weather connectivity to the region of Leh.
Vijay Diwas, observed annually on July 26, commemorates India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil district of Ladakh. The war, which concluded on this day in 1999, saw Indian forces overcoming significant challenges. Official figures report Indian casualties at 527 dead, 1,363 wounded, and one prisoner of war, Fl Lt K Nachiketa, whose MiG-27 was downed during a strike operation. The day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made and the triumph achieved in the face of adversity.
