S. Jaishankar’s Diplomatic Call with UK Foreign Secretary Amid Sheikh Hasina Speculations

New Delhi: S. Jaishankar, Indian External Affairs Minister received a call from UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Thursday to Amid speculations regarding former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina seeking asylum in the UK. The conversation between Jaishankar and his British counterpart focused on the evolving situations in Bangladesh and West Asia, as confirmed by a post on X from the Indian minister.

The Ministry of External Affairs’ spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, elaborated during a weekly briefing that the discussions centered on recent developments in Bangladesh, where the political landscape has become increasingly fluid. Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post on August 5, 2024, and subsequently traveled to India. Her resignation came amid growing protests in Bangladesh, primarily led by students demanding the abolition of the quota system for government jobs. These protests have since escalated into broader anti-government demonstrations.

While there is speculation regarding Sheikh Hasina’s plans to seek asylum, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has dismissed these as mere rumors. Speaking to The Daily Star, he mentioned that his mother has not yet decided whether to seek asylum in the United States or the United Kingdom. He confirmed that Sheikh Hasina is currently staying in Delhi, accompanied by his sister, and will remain there for the time being.

The political situation in Bangladesh remains tense, with the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, sworn in recently. The future course of Sheikh Hasina’s actions remains uncertain, with her current focus on her stay in Delhi.
