Taxi Drivers Join Protest Against Stringent Hit-and-Run Penal Law in Dehli

New Delhi: In a continuation of the nationwide unrest among transporters, taxi drivers in Delhi took to the streets protesting against a new penal provision related to hit-and-run accidents. Under the proposed section in the Indian Judicial Code Bill, persons fleeing the scene of an accident can face a maximum punishment of 10 years. The protest at Jantar Mantar saw participation from various transport unions, including Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress and All India Auto Taxi Transport Organisation.

Despite assurances from the Home Ministry, taxi drivers expressed concerns about the severe penalties, with some saying they could not afford the heavy fines. Delhi Transport Union president Sanjay Samrat criticized both the central and state governments for regressive policies that adversely impact transporters and drivers. The monarch stressed the need to officially withdraw the law and suggested alternative measures to reduce road accident casualties, including setting up of call center numbers for immediate accident reporting and installation of cameras at various locations . Despite the protests, public transport remained unaffected.
