Colombia Taxes Ultra-Processed Food: Does India Need a ‘Junk Food Law’ Too?
Delhi: Colombia has recently enacted groundbreaking legislation known as the “junk food law,” making it the world’s first jurisdiction to impose taxes on ultra-processed foods. This pioneering bill, heralded as a potential model for other nations, represents a significant step in the global effort to address unhealthy dietary habits. Following years of advocacy, the “junk food law” has been officially implemented, introducing a phased approach to taxation. The additional tax on targeted processed foods will commence at 10% immediately, with incremental increases to 15% in the next year and a further rise to 20% by 2025, as reported. This move underscores Colombia’s commitment to combating the consumption of unhealthy foods and may serve as a precedent for other countries grappling with the challenge of promoting healthier dietary choices through innovative legislative measures.
