New Delhi: Gleneagles BGS Hospital, Bengaluru, proudly announces the successful discharge of Mrs. Vinoda M, a 44-year-old patient, following complex bilateral lung transplantation. Mrs. Vinoda, diagnosed with end-stage interstitial lung disease, had been experiencing severe breathlessness and persistent cough for over eight months, requiring high-flow oxygen therapy at home. With her condition progressively worsening, she was evaluated and registered for a bilateral lung transplant with Karnataka SOTTO (JSK). On November 13, 2024, she underwent a bilateral sequential lung transplant after a size-matched, blood group-compatible deceased donor was identified.
The procedure, performed on veno-arterial ECMO support, was led by Dr Balasubramani Govini, Director and HOD of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, and Heart Lung Transplant. Commenting on the procedure, Dr Govini said, “This case highlights the intricate planning and precision required for such high-risk transplants. The successful outcome is a testament to our team’s expertise and commitment to world-class care.”
Post-operatively, Mrs. Vinoda faced challenges, including respiratory muscle weakness and infections. Under the guidance of Dr Apar Jindal, HOD Pulmonology & Lung Transplant Programme, a multidisciplinary team ensured comprehensive care, including tracheostomy management, targeted antibiotic and antifungal therapy, and intensive rehabilitation. Reflecting on the case, Dr Jindal stated, “This success illustrates the importance of a collaborative approach and the unparalleled dedication of our team to achieving positive outcomes for our patients.”
Dr Sharanya Kumar, Senior Consultant Transplant Anaesthetist, played a pivotal role in managing the perioperative and intraoperative complexities of this high-risk procedure. Speaking about the case, Dr Kumar remarked, “Anaesthesia in lung transplantation requires meticulous coordination and precise management to ensure patient stability throughout the surgery. I am proud to have been part of this incredible journey and witness the resilience of our team and the patient.”
Dr Manjunath P H, Consultant Pulmonologist, who played a vital role in Mrs. Vinoda’s recovery, remarked, “The journey of this patient from dependency on high-flow oxygen to her current condition is a testament to the strength of integrated pulmonary and transplant care. Our focus remains on ensuring optimal respiratory health and long-term recovery for every patient.”
Overcoming significant hurdles, Mrs. Vinoda progressed steadily, with her tracheostomy decannulated on December 5, 2024. She is discharged with minimal oxygen support and continues her journey toward recovery through nutritional and physical rehabilitation.
Expressing her gratitude, Mrs. Vinoda shared, “I cannot express how grateful I am to the doctors and staff of Gleneagles BGS Hospital. They gave me a second chance at life when all hope seemed lost. I am looking forward to spending time with my family and living life to the fullest again.”
