Rare Blood Disorder Successfully Treated at AOI Gurugram
Gurugram: The American Oncology Institute (AOI) in Gurugram has recently marked a remarkable medical achievement by successfully diagnosing and treating a 65-year-old woman with Myeloproliferative Neoplasia-Essential Thrombocytosis, a rare and complex blood disorder. This condition, characterised by the excessive production of platelets in the bone marrow, poses significant health risks, including blood clots, bleeding, and abnormal clotting.
The patient, with a history of hypertension, sought help at AOI after suffering from persistent headaches and mild gum bleeding for four months. Initial examination revealed high blood pressure and abnormal blood counts, leading to the diagnosis of Essential Thrombocytosis. This rare subtype of myeloproliferative neoplasia necessitates specialised diagnostic and treatment approaches.
Dr AK Dhar, Head of Medical Oncology at AOI Gurugram, emphasised the importance of comprehensive diagnostics, including genetic testing and bone marrow examination, in confirming the condition. He stated, “Essential Thrombocytosis is a rare condition that necessitates careful evaluation and specialised treatment.”
The patient was treated with cytoreductive therapy, a method to reduce the bone marrow’s platelet production, and antiplatelet agents. These treatments effectively lowered her platelet levels, mitigating the risk of complications such as strokes and heart attacks. Dr. Dhar noted, “Cytoreductive therapy, along with antiplatelet agents, plays a crucial role in managing Myeloproliferative Neoplasia-Essential Thrombocytosis.”
Dr. Amit Dhawan, RCOO of AOI Gurugram, highlighted the institute’s commitment to tackling challenging medical conditions. “Our patient’s successful diagnosis and treatment exemplify our commitment to addressing even the most challenging medical conditions. Our multidisciplinary team’s expertise was instrumental in ensuring the best possible outcome for the patient.”
Following treatment, the patient’s platelet counts normalised, showcasing the effectiveness of the care provided at AOI Gurugram. This case underscores the significance of specialised medical care and the institute’s dedication to delivering top-notch healthcare, especially for rare and complex blood disorders.
AOI Gurugram, part of a network of super-specialty cancer hospitals in India and South Asia, continues to offer world-class cancer care and diagnostics, reaffirming its position as a leading healthcare provider in the region.
