17 Workers Hospitalized After Ammonia Gas Leak at Pune Food Plant
New Delhi: 17 workers , including 15 women, were hospitalized following an ammonia gas leak at a food processing company in Bhandgaon, Pune district, on Wednesday. The leak originated from a cooling unit in a ready-to-eat food preparation facility located approximately 60 km from Pune.
According to officials, the incident resulted in ammonia poisoning symptoms among the staff members, who were promptly admitted to a nearby hospital. As of Thursday morning, one person remains in the ICU, but their condition is reported to be stable. The other sixteen individuals are out of danger and recovering.
Police Inspector Narayan Deshmukh of the Yavat police station, which falls under the Pune rural jurisdiction, provided details about the incident. “On Wednesday morning, an ammonia leak from the cooling unit in the food processing unit led to 17 staffers exhibiting symptoms of ammonia poisoning. They were subsequently hospitalized. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the leak,” Deshmukh said.
The food processing company, specializing in ready-to-eat meals, is cooperating with authorities to address the situation and prevent future occurrences. The incident underscores the need for stringent safety protocols in industrial settings to protect workers from hazardous exposures. The ongoing probe aims to identify any lapses in safety measures and ensure that corrective actions are implemented.
